Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
In a story from The Hollywood Reporter, Universal is putting a new spin on The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in which Keanu Reeves will star. Justin Haythe (Revolutionary Road) will write the screenplay. Director Nicolas Winding Refn is currently in talks to helm the project. The film will be based on Robert Louis Stevenson's book about a doctor who manages to scientifically develop an evil self. Current plot details for the film are being kept top secret by the studio.
Apparently, Universal has also been looking to make a version of this film with Guillermo del Toro; however that version will be different. Guillermo’s version will follow the Stevenson tale more closely. Also, the director's plate is full with The Hobbit for New Line, so it may be years before we see his version of Jekyll and Hyde.
The Danish filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn entered our radar with his first feature, Pusher, in which he put the audience in the unusual position of spending 100 minutes in the shoes of a Copenhagen drug dealer hoping that he would save his skin.
Refn followed this with the gritty Bleeder and then his first English language production, the psychological horror Fear X, written in collaboration with cult novelist Hubert Selby Jr. Even though Fear X was critically acclaimed, financial problems with Fear X led Refn to declare bankruptacy.
